3 Reasons Why I Am a Novice Runner and 3 Great Things Coming Soon!

I went on a run slow jog tonight.  It was a disaster.  Let me tell you three reasons why I am a novice runner:

1)  I decided to run when it was 87* out... bad idea.

2)  This was my first "run" in three weeks.  Should probably stop spacing out my runs so much!  I think my heart is still racing.

3)  I ran wearing my Zaggora Hotpants.  {Can't believe I just admitted that I bought those... but at least I had a Groupon, right?!}  Basically, they suck the sweat out of you while you workout... I'm pretty sure they also cause you to die of heat exhaustion much faster.

Anyone have any running advice for a novice?  I am up to two miles and have the goal of running a 5K in 30 minutes by the end of summer... but wow, that doesn't seem very realistic right now!

Next up, three great things coming soon!

1) My very first giveaway!  I am now at 100 followers, and as promised, I will be hosting my first giveaway!!! I'm waiting on a few contributors to get back to me, but it may happen as soon as tomorrow.  You can expect a LOT of great items... award certificates, comprehension goodies, character education items, and a Target gift card!  Some bloggers are even letting you choose your own item from their store!  Too bad I can't win my own giveaway ;)

2) My new blog design is coming soon!  I won a free blog design from Sour Apple Studio during my first week blogging... how lucky is that?!  I got a sneak peak of it yesterday.  Love it!

3) I am hoping to have the grand opening of my TPT store soon!  I am getting closer to conquering my fear of copyrights :-)  I am also eager to start sharing some freebies!  {need to do less blog stalking and more creating!}

One last quick update:  Thanks for all of the great feedback on my ScootPad post yesterday!  The lovely folks at ScootPad answered my questions very quickly.  I updated my post with all of the information they shared!

  1. I agree with your comment about the TPT store and more creating and less stalking!! One of my biggest fears with it is all the copyright stuff. Have you learned anything you want to share!?!

    1. I really need to take a day {or a week!} of no google reader reading or blog hopping. I bet it would make a tremendous difference in what I can accomplish! Actually, I have learned a few things! Definitely hasn't taken my fear completely away, but it has helped. How about I post about it when I open up my shop? :)

    2. That would be wonderful!!! I look forward to it.

  2. I second the copyright fear (or is it third? since Kate shared first...) I hope you do decide to share any/everything you've learned to help you overcome this terror! Would love to begin creating better things, and sharing (legally) what I've already made:)

  3. I need to check into hot pants. I have the biggest fear of copyright rules/regulations. It's so confusing. Can't wait to see your new look.

    1. I feel ridiculous wearing them {mostly because they say "hot pants" right on them!}, but I really do like them! Send me an email if you decide to buy them... I have some ordering tips from experience!

  4. I am terrified of the copyright police. I don't even understand clip art policies.

I have the greatest running tip ever. I have run a marathon and done a triathalon so in the past I was a runner. After a few years of being less dedicted to my running I am now training for a half marathon. You didn't need to know all that but I thought it would give me a little more credibility. Now here is the best strategy for increasing stamina and distance. Run for 4 minutes and then walk for 1 minute. You will find that your average pace will be faster and you will be able to go farther.

    1. I am so glad I'm not alone in my fear! I felt like EVERYONE was creating things, except for me! I found some great clip art guides that I will share in a post soon. Wow, a half marathon is my ultimate goal... good for you! That is a really good tip. I always feel like I have to RUN to train, but I bet that minute of walking really helps. I will try that today. Thanks!!

  5. Hi Kate! I just saw your blog on the whole brain 2nd grade teacher's list, which I just joined. I look forward to following your posts! On the running, try going early in the morning, before the heat gets too bad. The heat and humidity in Alabama are a challenge - at my age(50s)I wouldn't be able to make it at any other time! I'm trying to walk/run 3 miles 3 - 5 times a week. Make that a fast walk/slow jog! It takes me about 40 minutes, longer if I've been out of town and off my routine! I started last summer - after no exercise for many years - and can tell a big difference in how I feel. I'm going to try Tricia's suggestion above, 4 min. running and one walking instead of my half and half routine.

    1. Hi Cindy! Where is the list at? I will have to check it out for more blogs to follow... I didn't know I was on a list! Going early in the morning involves me not sleeping in :) That will be a challenge, but I think it's worth it {at least for some days!} I am going to try Tricia's suggestion too. Good luck with your running!

  6. Do you like biking or swimming? I feel that changing things up helps me build stamina and keeps me from burning out. It's also easier for me to bike and swim for long periods of time in this heat because I don't get as hot as I do when running. Also, get good running shoes if you're going to be running long distances. Whenever I feel an injury coming on, it's usually because I need new shoes. Good luck!

    1. Well, I don't have a bike, so that eliminates biking... but I do have a pool! Perhaps I should swim some laps instead of laying on a raft so often! I do need to buy new shoes too. I tried running intervals tonight and that seemed to be less life threatening :) Thanks for the advice!

  7. I HATE running, but I do it at least 3 times a week. I always dread it but feel so much better afterward. We (my mom and I) started with the "Couch Potato to 5K" podcast. It literally takes you from walking to running a 5K with walk/run intervals. We well into the 10K one now (running 6 miles)....I thought I would grow to love it but it just hasn't happened yet. ;) I did get some new running shoes (because I got shin splints for the first time ever recently) - I went with Brooks and I absolutely love them (I think they help because I have high arches).

    1. I definitely don't enjoy it, but I do LOVE the feeling afterwards! I used the couch to 5k app last summer, but never make it to the 5k! I am using Runster now and really like it... I do well with structure and a voice telling me when I can run and walk! I am going to keep with it because I'm still waiting for that moment when I can say that I love running :) Thanks for the feedback!

  9. I'm in the same boat as you when it comes to running! I ran a 5K a few months ago after I used the couch to 5k plan then I just took a break and stopped running. I'm trying to start again but it isn't easy!

I have another 5K scheduled for the end of August though and have the same goal as you. Then I want to start training for a half marathon in December.

I can't wait to see your blog reveal, I bet it'll be adorable! :)
